In June, the Center was graced by a visit from Stanislaw Cardinal Dziwisz, Archbishop of Kraków, Poland.  Over a two-day period, Cardinal Dziwisz, who faithfully served for over 40 years as secretary to Pope John Paul II, toured the Center with a group of distinguished guests, held an impromptu signing of his book, A Life With Karol during a welcoming reception...

A Message from the

Deputy Director:

Dr. Hugh Dempsey

Throughout the world, people are setting up crèches and trees for Christmas.  We at the Center are doing the same.  We invite everyone to celebrate the Christmas season here with us beginning on December 5, the opening of our annual crèche exhibit, “Joy to the World: Celebrating Pope John Paul II’s Marian Spirituality.”  Our exhibit of over two hundred crèches from throughout the world represents one of the largest displays in the metropolitan D.C. area and reflects one of the purposes of the center: intercultural relations.

Faithful in Washington and Bethlehem share a Christmas message for peace

Washington Auxiliary Bishop-elect Barry Knestout and Patriarch Fouad Twal, the Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, led a joint Christmas message for peace in the Holy Land on Dec. 13, 2008. The simulcast was part of a day long, multi-event program at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington hosted by the Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation in Washington and the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center. - Read more and watch video

Our Lady of America

The Pope John Paul II Cultural Center welcomes pilgrimage groups to visit the Center and venerate this statue of Our Lady of America.

Dr. Dempsey and the staff commented about the majestic beauty of this statue and warmly welcomed her into the Center. Initially gracing the rotunda entrance of the Center, Our Lady of America has been moved to a new venue where pilgrims will have the opportunity to not only see the statute but also partake in quiet, reflective, and meditative moments.  Our Lady now occupies a grotto-like setting in the Lower Lobby of the Center.

Holy Land Arab Christians:

Faith and Culture Exhibit

Arab Christians represent some
of Christianity’s oldest faith traditions as
descendants of the first people to be called
“Christian”. These brothers and sisters in
faith have been spiritual monuments to Jesus
Christ’s earthly ministry since the time of the first Pentecost (Acts 2:11). They are the ‘living stones’ in the land of the incarnation.

Divine Mercy Mass in honor of DIVINE MERCY is celebrated at the Cultural Center the last Sunday of the month at 3:00 PM.

Pope John Paul II, both in his teachings and personal life, strove to live and teach the message of Divine Mercy. As the great Mercy Pope, he wrote an encyclical on Divine Mercy: "The Message of Divine Mercy has always been near and dear to me… which I took with me to the See of Peter and which it in a sense forms the image of this Pontificate."

- Pope John Paul II
